I have a Katrina rescue that is part beagle...my son acquired her first...then she ended up with me(long story)!! She was quite a runner at the onset even with a fenced yard. Be careful! Her nickname was Houdini for a while!! Had to bail her out of the SPCA. She is 8yo now have had her for about 5 years. Nikki has turned into quite the princess! She's not overwt. LOVES her walks on a leash!! Adopts whatever animal is brought into the house. Basically has us wrapped around her little paw!! Good luck with your new addition!! She looks almost exactly like our Beagle, Maggie. We got her almost 2 years ago from the pound. We knew she was the one when she climbed up into my husbands lap within the first few minutes of meeting her. It took a long time to get used to her signals to go out, as she is not very vocal at all 9she rarely barks, unless it's at another dog). We had many messes to clean up until she and we "got it'. We keep her on a run or leash when outside at all times (can't afford a fence), otherwise she finds a scent and runs with it. As with our previous Beagle, she has gotten to the point where she will come home on her own. And yes, she is very food motivated. She is the most loveable and sweet dog, and we all love her. Our first Beagle, Pfarfel, loved to run up to the farm when he managed to get away and gorge himself on interesting things that dogs will eat, then come home looking like he ate a basket ball. You are definately going to need the fence We grew up with Beagles They never could be leashed outside they just would break it They are very loving Yours looks just like our nipper did She was my favorite and she was very noisey but we loved her for fifteen years

Beagles can be GREAT dogs, she might miss her buddy - that is something you will have to find out for yourself. I do know that sometimes (just like with people or other pets), they will have likes and dis-likes. I used to baby sit a beagle (Odie - short for the owners last name), Odie did NOT like the man across the street (Nobody liked the man across the street). But this man was in a wheelchair - so any time Odie would see a wheelchair - he would try to bite the wheels. I have heard that some like to go after bikes (the wheels), but they are a hunting dog and wheels are fast moving. Good luck and have fun with you new fur baby.

She's beautiful and I'm sure you'll love her sweetness. You MUST keep her on a leash!! Ours will be 9 years old soon. She's a sweetheart and overweight. She thinks we should share everything we eat with her and lets us know she's waiting for her bite!! It's a fairly healthy breed unless they ingest something unusual. Ours isn't vocal unless she's on a trail.

Hydrogen peroxide is usually a good way to clean dog accidents from carpet (test in a hidden spot first to make sure there's no bleaching). Take her out immediately after she eats, first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and any time she seems restless. Praise her lavishly while she goes in a proper place. She will learn. She's been through some rough times, but once she understands that this is really her home, the problem should go away. Best wishes.

she's a beauty! i hope you will consider going back for the cocker! dogs brought up together can be very loyal to each other. when we lost one of our cockers the other lay by the door for over a week waiting for him to come home. she was heartbroken! we have learned the hard way that 2 dogs are half as much work as 1 lonely dog. yes, we always get a dog for our dog, lol. have 2 cockers now and they are devoted to each other, and us.

She is so sweet! I love Beagles! We have had 3 beagle mix and 1 pure bred beagle. They are a very affectionate, loving animal and very smart! They love attention and kids. They are a pack animal and hate to be alone. My best advise is to google beagle to better understand them. We now have a beagle/springer spaniel mixed 9 year old. We rescued him from the shelter when he was 8 yrs old. They listen to you and understand what you are talking about. We could just be talking amongst ourselves about going somewhere and Buddy will get up and head to his kennel. We don't like him on the furniture so we put him in the kennel when we're not home. We also have a puggle (pug/beagle mix) which we just got last week. Buddy prefers my lap so the puggle is for my husband.

We're into Day 3 and she's still doing great! Another little peeing accident last night, because we waited too long in between taking her outside. Looks like 3 hours is the max, except that she holds it all night in the crate. Last night she was awake in the crate when I turned out the lights and went to bed, and she didn't even whimper..

I'm thinking of getting a halter instead of the collar -- what do you guys think? She pulls so hard on the collar sometimes, I'm concerned that it will slip right over those silky ears and come off. I'd like to give her some more time outside, on a leash hooked to a tree, but I won't do it if I think she might get the collar off.

The restlessness is the cue for going outside, but we're not good at picking it up yet. I think I'll keep watching the clock.

She is so cute on the long leash when she catches a scent and charges off into the woods! Wish I could hold the leash and take a pic at the same time.

She has not eaten the dry food we bought yet, although she drinks water from her bowl just fine. I'm calling the shelter this afternoon to see what they were feeding her, see if that will help.

P.S. The cocker spaniel that she used to live with has also been adopted, so he's not at the shelter any more.
