We've found bats in our house. Twice. They seem to have come down the chimney. It was night at it was interesting trying to get them out of the house. We turned all the lights inside and had the front door wide open. They seek the dark so they flew right outside.

Here in Austin,Texas there are 2 large urban bat colonies. They eat their weight in insects every night.
Don't ever touch or pick up downed bats as they may be rabid.

No, I have never had a bat behind my shutter BUT I have had a bat in my sewing room. It flew round and round around the ceiling fixture. I quickly ran out, screaming all the way. Opened the sliding glass door in the family room and it finally few out.

No I have never had them behind my shutters, but they do sleep in my attic vent (yes there is screening they can't get in the attic).
Bats stick to themselves for the most part, are very good to have around as they eat something like their weight in bugs nightly, and unless you have a large 'flock' of them, their poop should cause no problem. See where they are getting in around the screen and you may be able to close it up. Offer them a bat house attached to the upermost part of your house. As far as rabies, we live in the highest county in our state for rabies and have has only three cases of bat rabies in the last 8 years or so. We have to worry about the racoons more than anything.
I shot one last summer that was rabid and that was one out of more than 25 positive last year.
