WOW....that's a big one, hoping everyone is okay...if the buildings are well built, there might not be as much damage (compared to quakes in developing countries, etc.)

The whole south eastern section of Australia has been experiencing wild weather for the past two days.
Here in Adelaide it rained non stop yesterday with thunder and lightening all day. We are on flood watch. This has now moved to Victoria and NSW. We have had more rain in two days than we usually get all winter.
We are watching for reports of the quake in NZ.
I have friends just outside Christchurch and can't contact them. Will keep you all posted with any news.

From CNN:

A powerful predawn earthquake hit New Zealand, causing water mains to break and some buildings to crumble, though there were no immediate reports of deaths.

You can read more at: http://www.cnn.com/

Hope everyone is OK

There is widespread damage to buildings, no deaths but two seroiusly injured, no power or water. power may be reconnected by Sat eveing but water won't be available till maybe Monday.
The biggest problem is the storms that Aust. is experiencing will hit NZ by Sunday evening. Will let you all know if I can contact Gal who lives just outside Christchurch.

Another update:
Please keep the people of the South Island of NZ in your thoughts and prayers today.
The quake hit at 4.30am there is widespread damage to building particularly in Downtown Christchurch. A state of emergency has been declared.
But the tragedy of the day is a report just in that 9 people have been killed in a plane crash just on the west coast of the South Island at Fox Glacier, a popular tourist centre, almost straight across the Island from CHCH.
