I just remembered one I heard often from grandma as a kid, but never understood at the time: A stitch in time saves nine. I always wondered, nine what?

Another was: You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Huh? Now, with some life experience, they make sense.

I don't understand either of those...
If you SEW ONE STITCH NOW - it'll SAVE YOU NINE STITCHES at a later date....fix the hole/rip sooner than later to save labor.
