Got an iPad Air for Christmas. Do I need to install antivirus?
It came with a 6-month antivirus program from Best Buy that I can download to the iPad, but I'm not sure I need it. Figure after 6 months, the program will just ask me to buy a continuation of it. We have high-level antivirus software on our Windows PCs, but I'm new to Apple and unsure of the need. Any advice appreciated!

My DIL set up my regular ipad but I don't think she put antivirus on it. I know she activated the block pop up ad feature. I would look into how much storage the anti virus will use before installing it.

From what the people at the Apple store told me, you don't need one. Apple rarely has malware - Microsoft seems to be the whipping boy for malware - and Apple is good about adding any antivirus to your updates. This goes for the ipad and iphone only. The Mac's do need antivirus software. So as long as you do the updates, you should be good. I've had my iPad for 5 years and have never had any problems. At least that's what I was told at Apple. My best advice is to stop at an Apple store and ask them.
I do suggest that you download the Adblocker app though. Makes a WORLD of difference when on the web!

I got one too. My first generation iPad had gotten so old it would no longer update and kept falling off the internet. As far as I know you do not need anti virus software. I would call Apple and ask them your questions. As a new owner you get this service free for a certain amount of time. If you insure your new iPad, the service continues for as long as the insurance does. I love mine and read quilting blogs all the time. (download Bloglovin from the app store) Enjoy and Happy New Year Nancy

This is for mac but apparently it's not a bad idea to have antivirus.

Here's a long article about possible malware for iOS.

I've been using an iPad Air for 8 months and have not had any problems. We had an iPad2 before this and didn't have any trouble with it, either. We don't have any antivirus or malware protection. My nephew works all day on computers and he says that Microsoft is a target for viruses and malware, but not Apple. Go figure. We like Best Buy and get good help from them.
