Buy the clear liquid bait traps by raid or terro...They work the best...I have ants every season and have come to know them.
I start early by putting ant powder down around the exterior of the hse by Ortho...plus the grandulers they have...I also spray with Ortho around the base of the foundation outside...I start in Apr...If they do get in I put out the liquid traps...watch them take it to their nest whereever that is and in a day no more ants...You have to let them take the poison back to their nest...don't kill them. Once they find that food you'll start seeing an army match in and out taking it back...just ignore them and let them eat and take...Trust me that liquid stuff works.

Are they large, black ants?? If so, they are probably Carpenter Ants and you need to put "ant killer" outside along your house and they will be gone almost immediately. Make sure the product is for Carpenter ants - of course I can't think of the name right now -----------age related problem you know :-)

We will get them every spring and have found that putting something around the foundation of the house is the most complete cure for the whole summer.Not sure of the product,but we get it at Lowe's or Menards.

I have those sugar ants also so I'm trying out the Combat Ant bait stuff. I put some down last night; the ants ate that up with a spoon. I checked this morning & the ant population in my kitchen is infinitely less.

I will report back tonight after I check the other spots. I have multiple "colonies" where they have invaded.

Another thing to try around the outside of the house is powered SEVIN. You can buy it many places & it's reasonably priced. In the spring when it's dry out(on a dry day) we sprinkle it next to the foundation & about 6" from the foundation in a wide path. It seems to last for the whole year. We don't use it by our backyard pond. Seems to work MUCH better than sprays.
It's now against the law to sell Diazinon.

A few years ago I noticed little black ants in my kitchen. I called a pest control company that put a barrier all around the house along the foundation. I haven't seen an ant in the house again but seen a lot on our sidewalk and deck area.

I use instant gritts inside the house and out, they take it back to the nest to feed the young a couple of days they are gone.no chemicals to worry about in kitchen or on the ground. Quick gritts do not seem to work as well.

We have subterranian ants that seem to come in every time it rains. The only thing that works for us are the bait traps called Max Attrax. You place them where you see a trail, and wait for them to gather the bait. They will take it to the nest and to the queen. It will kill the hive. The temptation is to vaccum up the little critters but you have to resist that and allow them to take the bait to the nest. We found these at Lowe's Home Improvement Store.

I get so grossed out seeing ants in the house, but I don't want an insecticide company spraying all around my home because we try to avoid using poisons in our yard, and our bird is very sensitive to chemical agents. Good luck.
