Just a little info if your computer gets hijacked and you can't even get on line or open any of your files. Somehow (and I am extremely careful) the AV Virus got into my computer. This is the one where they lock your computer up and offer to clean it up if you pay them money. My virus programs couldn't remove it after scanning. I was lucky I had my laptop and went online and googled the problem. So here is what I did.

I have XP so I have system restore. First shut down your computer, then as it's loading quickly hit F8 to open in Safe Mode. From there you can restore your computer to BEFORE the virus got into your PC. Try this before calling for an expensive techie. As you can see, I'm back on line.

If you don't have system restore then maybe it would be wise to try to find out what you could do if it happens to you now, before it happens.

Hope this isn't too confusing and that it helps out IN CASE.

That's exactly what my DH did when I got the same virus. He's a systems engineer. He did eventually have to rebuild my system though. I suffered some damage from the virus. I lost half my pictures too. They didn't transfere, really upset me. DH didn't realize my pics were lost either, now their gone forever.

System Restore is also available in Vista and Windows 7.

When my husband's computer got infected with malware (a similar thing to what you had) - it would not let us reinstall Avast anti-virus or anything (didn't lock up the PC, though).

I found the site http://www.majorgeek.com and their forum was EXTREMELY helpful in getting his system clean.

Glad it helped. But one thing I perhaps didn't make clear was that if I didn't have another computer to connect to the internet (this virus completely disabled my pc), I wouldn't have been able to get help from the internet. So if you only have one computer, then either save this info or google the geek sites for help before it happens. MajorGeeks was probably one of the sites I visted, amongst many. There were other remedies for this problem, but the System Restore was the clearest, easiest and it worked!

Here are two different ways to clear out this virus:

Also don't forget you can go to the library and print out instructions of fixes for most all computer problems if your computer is down. Honestly, what do you think the techs do to fix a computer that is not physically broken? They Google the problem for a fix.

So true! I had a techie sit at my machine, in my home, drinking my coffee and google a problem I had many years ago. Then charged me $165 for the five minutes it took him to fix it. That's when I thought "I can do THAT!"

That e-how site is great! Wish I found it before going thru so many others.
