I think I would have turned them into a jeans quilt and told him that was the best I could do.

This is an excellent suggestion! I made a rag quilt out of a pair on my father's jeans after he passed away. I made sure I included the two back pockets (you can tuck in your kleenix when you're sick!) and the leather tag with the inseam and waist size to personalize it. It is the quilt I sleep with every night in cold weather. It's really warm and a part of him.

I had a good laugh out of the one about patching ALL the holes in a pair of jeans for her friend--I did that to for my grandson when he was home from the AF last year--he wanted just one more wear out of his favorite baggy jeans. Then I guess he nearly fainted when he got back to base and sorting out his civvies from uniforms.....He is due home for Christmas any day now--I wonder if he will ask me to mend any more jeans??????

Sounds like my DH. He says "but they're just now getting broke in." He's as tight as I aim and his has to always be special ordered. He's 6'5".

TenelTX, you know what? I told my people that my machine can't do any needlework anymore. Something wrong with it, but it can still quilt! So I buy a new jean! LOL

you need a vintage machine - find some old Singer 15 clone or a Spartan or a 66 or a 99 - the cost of the vintage will be about what you might pay for a service call or two

Enjoy your DH's while you can. Just a matter of weeks, we discovered he has cancer and it has spread to his brain. I prove to him every day of my love. It is really emotionally and physically exhausting, but that's all I can do. One feels so helpless with this killer of an intruder....
