I never could hold the yarn the way the instructions say. So do your own thing with holding the yarn.
Made lots of afgans over the years.
It is great to do while watching tv.
A good starter pattern is Mile A Minute.

the crochet part is very easy... that's why the pattern is marked 'easy'. the hard part for me is to stuff the doll evenly

Several years ago I bought one of those little " Learn to Crochet" books for 1 dollar back then. I can crochet anything now. I made my granddaughters "Dedication" long dress and bonnet when she was born. My daughter took her to a studio and they took pictures of her wearing it and laying in a beautiful bassinet covered in layers of Tulle. I love those pictures.

If you need hands on instructions, go to Joanns or Michaels or a yarn shop. They will have classes for beginners or maybe will show you how for free. My Grandmother taught me when i was in high school. She said you gotta make something not just make stitches. So she taught me the Granny Square, gave me her scraps and I was off!

[QUOTE=mandyrose;6288408]http://www.e-patternscentral.com/det...iteria=EYSPOOK I love scarecrows in fall they make the season I might have to take crochet lessons[/a
The scarecrow is darling! I do amigurumi and imagine
he is made with just the same two stitches...a sc (single crochet) and
a dc (double crochet). And the great thing about doing it is that you can
see progress quickly. The first thing you have to do is get a simple,
"I Can't Believe I'm Crocheting" booklet and just DO it.

Go to: www.leisurearts.com. On the left side of the page near the top click on
"instructional ebooks with video"...when the new window comes up look again to
left side toward the top of the page and you'll see "high definition instructional video"
...click on that and you'll get really close video instructions for free

There is really only a few stitches to learn in crochet. Everything is just a variation on those stitches. The easiest patterns to read are the ones which are drawn like charts. Try to get a pattern book with the diagrams in it and you may be less frustrated in understanding/ reading the patterns. American and English instructions have different terminology so make sure you stick to one or the other whilst you are learning. I could crochet at 7 years of age, so that's how easy it is.

There are super crochet You Tube videos. I've got several downloaded and hope to being trying it out since my DH has now stolen my sewing machine :-)

When I was wanting to learn, luckily an older lady in our church found out and gladly gave up a couple of evenings to give me some lessons. She was widowed and I was a teen and we had a lot of fun. She will still ask me occasionally if I've made anything lately. If you're a teach yourself kind of person go to youtube or find a book, if you're a teach me kind of person let people know you want to learn someone will gladly teach you.
