When we were in Guam, the main things we were told to do were
1) be sure any objects that could be picked up by the wind and therefore become projectiles (like plants in pots, coconuts, yard art, etc) were put inside
2) have plenty of food on hand that does not require electricity for preparation as power outages are likely and could last for several days. And if you have a camping stove be sure to get plenty of propane for it.
3) be prepared for water quality issues - bottled water to drink and bathtub full for washing, flushing, etc.
4) be sure your vehicle is parked where flying debris is unlikely to damage it
5) we used plywood to cover our windows on the side the wind was to hit first, then during the eye we moved the plywood to the other side of the house. Oh,and remember to leave a window open to relieve the pressure inside the house.

Yes, sounds like Irene may be the "big one" the meteorologists have been talking about for years. My heart goes out to those in the Bahamas who have been hit hard and to all others in harms way. All we can do is prepare and pray. Be safe, everyone and check in, if you have power, from time to time to let us know you are all right. (I'm on Long Island also)
