I know that some of you must live in the LA area and I am hoping and praying that one of you will have suggestions for me. My 45 year old daughter is having life threatening surgery in a couple weeks at UCLA Medical Center. Her 13 year old daughter and I will accompany her. Her husband recently bailed on her so it is up to me to take up the torch...so to speak. We need a VERY inexpensive but safe place to stay near the hospital. I am hoping that someone you know or perhaps you have a "guest house" or a room or 2 that you would be willing to rent during November for less than a month, most likely or possible even less if the worst should occur. I have tried every suggestion that my friends could make and I just don't know where to turn. We are flying there on Oct 29 and will stay 1 night in a hotel and then try to find something safe and inexpensive. Can any of you offer any unlikely sources that I might have overlooked other than a possible "guest house" to rent? Money is really tight but we can manage something inexpensive, I think. I know that prices there are much more than here in Florida. I also know that this really isn't the type of thing you see under chit-chat but I am beginning to get desperate. Thanks for reading this even if you can't help.

I live in NC but some of our hospitals have special places for families to stay for this reason. I would check with the social worker to see if they have something like this. My sil's mom is having surgery out of town and her mom's dr had to request it but the hospital has a place for them.

Good luck to your daughter and Ill say a prayer for her. I don't live in California but I am sure that possibly someone will come along and be able to help you. I know that when my sister was going through her cancer treatments that the hospital had something like a House that had bedrooms for families of hospitalized members that my brother in law stayed in across the street from the hospital. I would try calling UCLA and see if they have something like that available. I am pretty sure that they probably do.
    Good Luck to you.

Yes, contact the hospital. Ours around here have setups for family members from out of state.

A few school mates have used this site when coming to NY to find room and board for weeks at a time. At least you can get an idea of prices. Housing tends to be more expensive around hospitals, so you may need to extend your search.

Hope it helps and my prayers for you and your family.

I am a little too far away. You would not want to drive from my place. It takes us about 40-60 min depending on traffic. Sometimes more. I hope you are able to find something!

Unfortunately, there is no real provision at UCLA according to everything that I am able to fine. Some of the hotels do reduce the price for families but still are usually well over $100 per night. We are hoping to find a place with a small refrig. and maybe a microwave so we can save on eating every meal out. One could say that I am suffering from sticker shock over the price differences between CA and FL. I thank you all for your kind suggestions and we appreciate your prayers. This is such a loving group of friends on this board! Still hoping for something we can afford better. Tomorrow is another (and brighter) day just filled with hope. Thanks again, Donna

Prayers said. I am not familair with that area so I have no idea either but I hope something comes around. Have you tried churches to see if anyone rents out rooms and kitchen priviledges. My DD goes to another of the UC and found a room to rent with a single mom.

Contact a church in the area. They may have some ideas or perhaps chuch members who would be willing to step up and help. Our church has a small place we allow people to stay for a short time free of charge during a crisis.

Did you find this website? It doesn't list rates, but it is associated with UCLA Medical Center

When my friend was having experimental treat at Stanford Medical, the hospital has a couple of low cost motels close by. I would call the Center and ask if they also have some low cost "shelters", I'm sure that they do, when my granddaughter was in Redding for a emergency surgery, the hospital has a low cost "rooming" house.

fyi - Ronald McDonald house is only for families of children undergoing medical treatment. It is not for families of adults undergoing medical treatment :-(.

Contact the service organizations in the area, or in YOUR area, as they'll know who to contact in LA.

Kiwaniis, Lions Club, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Masons/Shriners..... this kind of thing is what they do best!

Contact Patient Services at the Medical Center. They'll have listings, or have arrangements with donors, volunteers, or possible Medical Sponsors that'll help.
work at the University of Colorado Cancer Center, .... those types of programs are widely availble.

I don't live in the LA area. Please contact the hospital social services dept. Often they have accomodations (very inexpensive) for out of town family members.

I am so sorry to hear about your daughter's health problems. I will keep her and all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Good suggestion about the churches. Tiverton house is $$$ for 2 people but thanks for your search. My daughter had already checked into that for us. Guess I will do a search on the local churches...that was such a great idea! Thanks to all for concern, help and prayers. Will keep you informed as I get answers...

When my late DH had some surgery at Stanford Medical Center, the admittance office as a matter of routine gave me a handout of local motels, maps and prices for their rooms. Some of the prices surprised me, but I chose to stay close instead of driving home, 140 miles away. I stayed in a very nice Motel 6, which we used often after that because it was so nice. It also had a good handicapped room we used after that, the managers told me about that when I explained why I was there. And told me which fast food places to eat in and which to avoid!!!

No, I'm not connected in any way with Motel 6, just my previous experience with them. No matter where you go, talk to the managers and ask for their ideas. They know the area.
