Default New/old Serger

I have to share - I have been going back and forth on if I should get a serger. I found a great deal on Craigslist and finally did the pick up today. It is an older machine, from what I have read probably built in the 90's. I will have to do more research on that. It is a Japanese built Singer 14U244B, 3/4 thread free arm with differential feed. It is so clean, no wear marks anywhere. I still need to go over it, clean out any fuzz and oil and then I get to play. I am really excited about this, it should be just sweet for sewing my handwoven cloth.

My poor dinning/sewing room has gotten crowded again:-)

Sounds like a great deal! I did a used Brother machine...probably same vintage. Took mine in for a pro tune up and did a class elsewhere as I'd never used one previously. Very happy with my decision...hope you re as well. Good luck.

Since it has the Singer name on it, personally I would pass on it.

I feel that way of Singer sewing machines past the late 50's & early 60's, but my understanding of sergers is that they are a different animal. From what I have read is that they are only built at a very limited number of factories and then are name branded after manufacturing. This seems to be a solid built little machine made in Japan and for $30 it will not bankrupt me if it does not pan out.

I have cleaned and oiled it, did a very small adjustment on the tension and it is sewing a beautifully balanced 4-thread overcast seam.

My experience with that machine is that when it is good, it is very, very good, but when it is bad, it is very bad. Mine needs a lower looper again, but when it was good, it made a lot of apparel and home dec items.

IF i was to purchase a new serger by Singer...I might agree BUT I bought one of these very similar Singer Sergers from a good friend of mine ( she has since passed. I miss her). She was clearing out her mothers' house as Mom was moving into an assisted living apartment. Her Mom used to do lots of home dec projects on it. It works like a charm!! I hope thhe OP enjoys it! I probably need to have mine serviced just to make sure all is well. I was impressed how it performed!

BTW, this serger got RAVE reviews on Pattern Review. It is similar in age as the one I have. I love the size of it too. That table is wonderful btw! I turned down the table at the time I bought the serger from my friend...huge regret on that one! It was V-shape...one side for the serger...the other fo the sewing machine. But I already had a couple of tables so.....enjoy it!!
