NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! RUN LIKE HECK AND CALL PAY PAL I won't even give pay pal my bank information..... Just one low limit credit card. I had pay pal, to many scams so quit them for a bunch of years, just rejoined, but they won't get anything without an official form and confirm. Be very careful. There are so many people who can take every cent you have. No SS on internet! No Bank info on internet.

I misplaced my Paypal debit card (somewhere in the house) and logged into paypal to cancel it and get a new one. Yes, I had to give my ssn#. This was logged into paypal. No email, no spoof. Uncle Sam just wants his pound of flesh. BTW, I no longer and haven't in years, used my paypal as a business account but do like to be able to use the debit card, saves a few ¢ on some purchases, every little bit helps.

So yes, Paypal asking for your SSN CAN be legit.

I just don't know why they need it if I only meet one of the stipulations - not both.

I guess I'll be making a phone call in the morning
Your tax I.D. is NOT your Social Security number! If you have a business registered with the State and Federal Governments, your State will assign you an I.D. number for you to charge sales tax to your customers &/or avoid paying sales tax on the merchandise and supplies you purchase for the operation of your business.

Yes, your SS number is your Tax ID!!! The only way your SS is not your tax ID is if you're a corporation!! You file your taxes with your SS number! The ONLY form you put an EIN on is the schedule C.

I have owned three National Cell Phone stores, a Tire Store and was a buyer for the local Post Office. In Missouri we have a Tax I.D. What did PayPal have to say?

You shouldn't have to get their credit card. It's offered, but like any other credit card, you can say no. Unless there is a savings every purchase I wouldn't bother with it.

My DH owned his own tv repair shop years ago and his tax ID was not his SS.

I would just be very careful, ultimately the final decision is yours.

That is someone who is trying to steal your identity. Be sure to report it to PayPal, and they will look into it to see if it is a scam. People send e-mails making believe they are PayPal, and they are not. Please, be very careful about opening e-mails, if they seem suspicious from PayPal, because they most always are. You can call PayPal. They are wonderful to work with and will help you out.

I have been using pay pal for years and it seems like I had to give my ss number when I first signed up. I would call them but if you do give any info just make sure you are signed into pay pal and dont click on any links you receive in email. The way I understood the tax thingy was that you have to meet BOTH requirments before you get a 1099.
