I've used boiling water and dawn to let it soak ... Mine is also so old that frankly, I know it's going to get nasty again so I don't stress too much over it. It hides in a cabinet most of the time and when I do use it, no one is home to notice it isn't sparkly.

I just soak it in hot water and dish soap.
and use a little elbow grease when scrubbing.

You might try Softscrub. Or an SOS pad. I use crockpot liners made by reynolds. No mess. YAY!!

I keep a shelf full of crock pot liners! They are great. No crock pot to clean. Be sure and use Pam or oil the liner so the food won't stick to it and cause a rip. I can lift the liner and place the liner and food into a dish to put in fridge, even the dish stays clean. LOL I'm the one that will toss a pan if I have to spend a lot of time scrubbing a mess out. Oh the liners work in the oven too.

Yes, you had it right, a used dryer sheet has enough chemicals left to do the job. We use them whenever we have stuck on things that need removing. We just use room temperature water. They work.
The dryer sheets are also good at removing the brown spots off baking ware and cleaning off the gunk that collects around sink spigots and cleaning the shower walls (not the glass, though).

no, I haven't heard of this or how it would work. When I have a pot that sticks I use either vinegar or old wine. It's like a deglazing techique when you cook. I did learn something new over Thanksgiving. We used cream of tarter to get the baking crap off the sides of the pan. I was amazed at how great it worked. It was my daughter in laws pan and it was new so we didn't want anything left in the pan but you know how some baking pans just cling to it. We got it all clean.

The older I get the heaver the pot seems to be when I have to clean it. Didn't realize they made liners. Will definitely look for some.

I use liners all the time. A full crock pot is VERY HEAVY so I use liners, lift food out of pot, place in plastic bowl & carry to church where I keep an old crock pot. We have potluck on Wednesdays and Sundays so I do a lot of cooking & carrying.
