I would so much rather be a "smart ass" than a "dumb ass". This is the best explanation of this phenomena ever!

her friends nicknamed her smart ass redhead, several years ago!

When someone in our family would call someone else a smart ass my Mom would always respond with "That's because we don't have dumb ass's in this family" and we still say it! So how wonderful your DD is NOT a dumb ass!
