Retirement....what state and why?
#81
I was born and raised in Arkansas. I plan to retire next June and I love Arkansas and we have a lot of retirees here. The cost of living is not as high as it is in a lot of other states. We do have four seasons.

We retired in 1997 from Michigan to Florida. Long story short, in 2011 we retired once again, from Florida to Michigan.
(Three of our four children are in Michigan and one is in Florida.) We did that due to my husband's Alzheimer's Disease. I will need support and help from the kids in the coming years and the child in Florida was five hours away and too busy to make that trip very often.

Love it here in the pines of AZ.
Some snow in winter but never very deep. Just a few inchs once in a while.
Show Low has most of the big stores, like Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, Kmart, Ross, and Big Lots.
No Target or Joanns, that's my gripe. One quilt shop but I prefer online shopping, its cheaper.
AZ dosnt have a good tax situation, you pay state tax.
Phoenix is a three hour drive thru mountains so don't go often.

Already have our retirement home...extreme northern Maine where there are more moose than people. Love it up there. Been living in New England for decades and have gotten used to the weather (5 seasons...Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall and Mud!). We are thinking of possibly a "snowbird" home down in the Mississippi/Alabama/Louisiana area. Kids all live in the greater Boston area. DH and I did what worked for us.

I live in western Massachusetts where Vermont and New Hampshire meet. I think of it as my little slice of heaven. I love the area, the 4 seasons and most importantly my family and friends. Great happenings for seniors.

If they'd move with me (which most would if I could afford to pay for it) I'd move to Hi. I lived there for 6 yrs and loved it. Lived in CA for 3 and hated the earthquakes, especially the one in 89. Most of the time here, we know when a bad storm is on the way and can prepare for it; can't do that with earthquakes.

Connecticut property taxes are going crazy here and many retirees are leaving the state because of it. But with 4 children close by, 12 grands and 3 great-grands I can't seem to make myself go. Hubby and I have talked about moving to South Carolina in the Bluffton area {near Georgia} as the weather is beautiful most of the year and taxes are so cheap compared to CT but for me it's the family that comes first! Also love New England for 3 of the seasons.

That said --I do love it here and wish I could afford to live here. New Milford is just too expensive as is the rest of the state. We have no family here and where we do have family, I have no desire to live-California.
Oh well-it will be what it will be.

My DH was stationed here in 1977 with the AF. He's from Charlotte and I'm from Augusta, so family was close. Now I only have a DB left of family and he lives about 6 miles away. My DS lives about 2 streets away. Have a DD and SIL and 2 GSs in Florida. One DGD in Lake Tahoe and one near Sacramento. Have no plans to move. Our house is on a slab with easy access and about 1800 sq ft so easy to heat and cool. Because of Hurricane Hugo in 1987 and were without electricity for about 2 weeks and had to use a generator, we put a propane gas heater (on the wall) for supplemental heat and had a well sunk with a hand pump for water if all electricity goes out again. They are there for backup only. We do have the change of seasons here. Summer is the longest and hot and humid but the winters are mild with some 20 degree weather occasionally and a little ice but it usually doesn't last long which is nice. Spring is delightful and my favorite time of the year as we have lots of flowers that bloom here. Of course, not all of the same type that grow in the North as we don't have the chill factor lots of plants need to bloom, like tulips, hyacinth, lilacs, etc. I have something blooming in my yard year round...
I always thought we'd have lots of family nearby for our old age, but everyone has lives of their own with careers, spouses, etc.
Determine why it is you live where you do. It would be very difficult for us to relocate at this time in our lives. Can't imagine moving 52 years of married "stuff". Some one will just have to move it or throw it away when that time comes...
