Have you read any Jan Karon books ? I started to write them down !

Starved as a barn cat
Green as tasseling corn
Came like ants to jam
Ran like a scalded dog
Dull as dishwater
Like a bee to clover
Hot as a depot stove
You messed with the wrong rhino
Looks like you were yanked up by the roots
Clinging like moss to a log
Stacking up like planes over Atlanta
That house is too small to cuss a cat
Dumb as wash on a line
Older than the Bill of Rights
Tires so bald he should start writing his obituary
Weak as pond water
Proud as a pup with 2 tails
Panting like a farm dog after a rabbit
Went through him like seed corn through a goose

Raining cats and dogs-- learned what that one was when visiting Anne Hathaway's Cottage in England (Shakespeare's wife).

The one a coworker always said was "Sexier than socks on a rooster". Never figured that one out though.

My dad's favorite "Busier than a one-armed paper hanger" Having hung wallpaper in my earlier days, it has a visual image that really works!

I think many have to do with the origin of the language they first were started in, doesn't make sense to us but there were reasons.

From my wise and witty Mother:
1). Drunk men and little children always tell the truth
2). Referring to a clean house: "shines like cat %#£% in the moonlight
3) I felt like a skunk who showed up at a picnic
4). Referring to politicians: It's easy to be generous with another man's money.

I've only heard this in the South and get in trouble if I use it elsewhere...
You're a mess. It means, "You're top notch or cute or whatever." It is meant as a compliment, although it sounds just the opposite. Go figure!

if you think about them, a lot of them make sense. I like the ones tranum listed. I got quite the visual on most of them and saw how they made sense
