I saw one of these after an accident in town here...in our 25 PH zone... with a pickup..was not pretty. I will see if I can find the pictures of it from our local paper and post them. It made the front page because of the smallness of the car and how much smaller it was from the accident. She t-boned a truck that pulled out in front of her. She was hurt..he was not.

I also have a Smart Car. It is our only car. It is quite roomy inside for just two. I take all my stuff ( machines, etc) to classes without any problems. I quilt with a church group and do quilts for local VA's, nursing homes and shelters. I have had it for 3 years and we have not had any problems. The car has excellent crash test ratings. I do take it on the interstates, but I prefer the back roads as you can find more quilt shops. LOL

The majority of people do not know that the crash test ratings on cars, are not ratings compared to all other type of cars. They are comparing to other vehicles of equal size.. not sizes above or below that car. The smart car does rate very well for THAT size group.. but they also say, if you want safety for a headon crash..go bigger. They also said this car is more for around town driving..not very safe for interstate driving.

But I drive this everyday and it gets 21mpg in the city and almost 32mpg on the road with the A/C on and with 435hp it will out run most cars on the road in style!

It has a 1957 Chevy front bumper, 55 Oldsmobile grille, 1950 Mercury grille opening, 1955 Pontiac trim, 1949 Lincoln steering wheel, I pie cut the front fenders and leaned them forward 2 1/2 ", shaved the door handles and emblems, frenched the headlights and taillights. Just too many things done on the car it would be easier to tell you what I left alone LOL!!

I have had this car since I was 13 and I am in my mid 40's now. This has not been the only car I have had but the one with the staying power!

She's a beauty! Would she be called a hybrid? LOL

I'll have what Billy is driving!! BTW, I never knew there was such a thing as a two-door sedan. I thought two-door was always a coupe. You learn something new every day.

We have had a smart for over two years. My husband uses it for commuting and it has saved us a lot on gas! We really like it- inside is feels like you are in a full size car, and we are both pretty tall. A lot of our skeptical friends were very surprised after getting inside, they kept saying "oh it feels like a real car!" And even I can parallel park it LOL.

They are not great in serious snow (over six inches or so) A little bit is not a problem. The interstate is not a problem, it maintains highway speeds with no difficulty. And the crash safety ratings are quite high. My only complaint- it has a stiff suspension, if you are driving on badly rutted/pot-holed roads, you will feel it more than usual.

I think they're pretty cute little cars, but my concern would be the other vehicles that might hit you.

Billy, I love your car.

the smart cars are so small. This past winter after one of our rare snow storms which put a lot of ice on the road a smart car was going down the road and hit a patch of ice and the car litterly slid sideways straight across 4 lanes of traffic and since the snow was built up along the side it went up over the snow and crashed into the underpass cement; to say the least that is the last time that car was driven. They are great on gas but I don't think there is enough weight to hold them to the road in bad weather.

Have you considered a Prius? At the time I bought mine it had the most cargo area and passenger room that we could find in a hybrid car. I went from having a Honda Odyssey to the Prius and don't miss it at all. Best car purchase we ever made. They now make an electric plug in also. Ann in TN
