I have a XP laptop I use off-line to run a few older programs I like. Running it off-line means you won't be able to download new patterns, but you can use it for the ones you already have. If you really want to download a new pattern, go on-line just for that and you will minimize catching a virus.

Quote: I think I understand what you're saying but my problem is with my emb. mach. not seeing all the designs on the flash drive. Would Win. 8 affect that? I do have Win 8.1 on my computer. I hate to think I'll have to download them on my laptop with XP. It's slower than Methusala.
There are possible reasons you cannot see the designs on the flash drive in your machine. The design/designs may be larger than your hoop, or have stray stitches outside the hoop area. Another reason might be too much data for the machine to read. Have you tried transferring only 1 or 2 of your designs to the drive at one time? What does your manual say about stitch count limits when loading into your machine? If your OS was at fault, there would be no readable data..I would think.

I am having the same problem. I was told about the only thing I can do is to buy one of the little boxes that you transfer the patterns too or buy a new machine hehe or get an older computer like a windows x or something like that.

Prism99 said it all...
...buy another smaller, or older computer with THE operating system that is compatible with your Bernina and/or BabyLock, and run it from there exclusively.

Darn those companies, incl. Bernina, etc. and esp. Microsoft, for building in OBSOLESCENCE with their products. It's all about the money!

Good luck.

I am so terribly sorry for you. I do hope you can get something that will help you. I don't have an embroidery machine or even a computerized machine, my newest machine is a Bernina 930. That is exactly why I refuse to get a computerized machine. All of the latest updates and programs are killers. It is understandable that a new version of something might not work on an older computer program, but the reverse is totally mind boggling. DH gave me anew computer for Christmas, with Windows 8.1 and now my older digital camera an picture programs for it won't work. I really miss my old computer I had xp on it. It is all about the money game and selling people new products because their old systems won't work with new versions. They never think or care that not everyone can afford new equipment at the drop of a hat, and may have lots of money invested in their older working equipment or programs.

Quote: Just wait til you have to use Windows 8!

Unfortunately, our older technologies are now like the old-timey farmhouse crank phone on the wall compared to the last of the basic cell phones.

Then when we have to move to the newest iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, it can be major heartache and confusion!
Just ask your 7 year old grandchild to help you, see how that makes you feel!
