I just use hot vinegar, wanted to kill some ivy I didn't want growing where it was. Killed it dead.

Where we live the weeds are very robust to say the least. They will grow through two layers of landscape fabric very quickly even in pretreated dirt and lots of mulch. The vinegar/salt/dawn thing will kill the green part but then those robust roots produce another crop. Wish it worked for me.

I too don't know if it is mentioned in the link, but a layer of salt on a piece of tinfoil, sure cleans the iron up nicely
