I have read Peace from the Pieces a very interesting book. I am reading Chinese Cinderella the next is Falling leaves and the 3 is a spiritual book of Chine culture called Watching the tree. all written by Adeline Yen Mah I bought them at Alabris.com for .99 each shipping is usually 3.00 each. Cheaper than a magazine.

Dick Francis......his sturdy characters always overcome the odds stacked against them. English horse racing/steeplechase settings. He 'held my hand' while I had surgery, therapy and recovery. A bit out of date but clean and well written.

I also read in plain view about quilts and the underground rail road. I went to the attic and discovered my g grand Mother had made some of them. Now the mystery of my g grand father walking the rail road to Canada made sense. My dad and his brothers thought the guy was no good. It is to bad they have all passed as they would now see him in a different light.

I don't read books the traditional way much, I read with my 'ears', books on CD.
I'm now into the 3rd and last of the Hunger Games trilogy ... its marketed for young adults but many adults love them.
Recently finished Jean Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear and enjoyed it, looking forward to starting the next one.
This author has been recommended to me and her books look like a fun read ...

I haven't read all the other recommendations yet, but one of my all-time favorite books is The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. Not to be confused with the movie of the same name which just butchered a wonderful story. I've recommended or loaned it to folks for years and everyone loves it.

Jean Auel has the Earth Children series starting with the Clan of the Cave Bear. They will keep you going for a long time. I found them fascinating, if you are interested in the early people...
Speaking of movies which butchered books, don't watch the movie, it is terrible (apologies to Daryl Hannah).
the Hunger Games were recommended on NPR radio by the person who has a show once in a while about books that she likes.

No one has yet mentioned one of my favorite authors: Larry McMurtry! He has written so many books and each one is different in it's own way. I'm sure you remember "Terms of Endearment" or "Lonesome Dove"; how about "The Last Picture Show". McMurtry wrote all of those and many, many more. Just check your library shelf and pick one -- any one.
