Book bags: My Grandsons were 3 & 5 yrs. old & loved the 'book bags' I made for them. It's been a little over a yr. since I made them and they still use them. I measured one of their largest story books and used that size for a pattern - had to make it so the book slipped into the bag the long way so that with the shoulder strap the bag didn't drag on the floor.

I made my grandsons shorts with their choice of Muppet characters on them for a couple of years. They graduated to dinosaurs, favorite number (3), dragons of all kinds. I must have embroidered 25 - 30 t shirts with those designs also. They were passed from one brother to the other and lasted quite a few years. The kids loved them.

Great ideas! My grandsons are 11 and 13 now. I have made them a 'toy' that is going around now. It is a little like the Hacky Sack that I knew from days gone by. This is 2x3" and filled with sand, rice or beans. Idea is for them to toss it, kick it, and catch it. They learn to do an entire routine with the little sack.
Bean bags are always good to use for their garbage can basketball.

Following up on the superhero cape idea, you can make simple costumes by making a tabard. A tabard is best known as the narrow poncho-like piece worn by musketeers. http://www.reddawn.net/costume/tabard.htm
But they can be used for other costumes as well. Use bright red fabric and applique their initials on the chest for a superhero. Put stars on it and make a pointed hat, and it's a wizard outfit. Use camoflague fabric for a soldier. And the costumes don't have to be elaborate - their imaginations will fill in the details.
