My Brother Nouvelle 1500s is absolutely great for this - sews through 4-5 layers with no trouble. It is marketed under lots of different names such as PQ 1500s and Baby Lock and Juki have the same machine with a different badge on it. I think Juki made them for the different brands.

I'm thinking an industrial machine would be the best and last the longest with heavy duty projects.

I have a New Home that is 14 years old and it sews denim just fine. I think all machines would probably sew denim, it's the needle and thread that's important. I have to cut off and re hem Levi's for my son and I did have problems until I saw the size 18 needles for denim and tried those. I also got the orange or golden colored thread made just for jean. I also got the jean a ma jig for sewing over the humps of double seams. I don't have a problem anymore. I just hemmed 3 pairs last week and all went real well. You just have to have the right tools for the job.

Heavy duty needle and my old Singer 201 - cannot beat it - will sew through many heavy layers.

My Singer 201 (which was free on Kijiji) sews through denim very easily. My Janome 6500 (which cost me $2000 in 2004) balks, growls and breaks needles over the thicker seams. The 201 is fast and just powers through the layers and doesn't complain at all. I got it to put zippers in heavy duc coveralls and it also FM quilts beautifully and has a larger harp space to handle queen sized quilts. There's just no comparison between those two machines.

I hem jeans all the time (even petite is a little long) on my Wards Computer 2001. No special needle or thread. Just have to go slowly over the seams and maybe lift the foot a little to get over the hump. This machine was purchased in 1987 so you know it isn't a youngster anymore and it isn't especially made for heavy duty denim but it sure gets the job done!

I love my Pfaff with duel feed. It goes over the heavy seams easily.

I can sew 6 to 8 layers of jean material on my singers, 221, 15, 99, 66 Great machines. I also have a jean-a-majig so my Bernina can sew jeans also, it helps it over the thick seams.
