Maybe it's legal, but moral is another question. States like Florida treat workers as disposable, and others consider them a great resource. I worked for one firm that used the phone speakers to record, not only sales calls, but general office chit chat. As to personal calls, why are you making them on company time? In this economy, you can't afford to slip up, or fifty of us will be lining up for your job.
Kinda makes me wonder if they are considering an automated phone system, and are being marketed to by VOIP providers promising huge savings. (VOIP = Voice over Internet Protocol)
They could also be working stats to find out what customers respond well to, so they can reduce your interactions to scripts designed to "delight" customers, in the shortest response time.

i doubt it's illegal. as Lostn51 pointed out, they are company phone lines monitored in pursuit of company interests. it's no different than tracking charges on a corporate credit card, mileage and stops in a company car, etc.
we don't get paid to make personal calls, to gossip in the halls, or to do anything else that isn't directly related to the jobs we were hired to do. i'm the first to admit i don't devote every single minute at the office to things that are 100% work related. but if i got "called out" for it, i don't feel i'd have a right to complain.
did you know that many companies also have software installed on their networks that monitor everything you do on the computer? every stop you make on the internet highway; every email you send; every keystroke you type.
is it sneaky and creepy to record you without letting you know? probably. but, is it wrong for them to protect their own interests? no.
look at it this way ... if you aren't doing anything wrong - and i assume you are not - you have nothing to worry about.
so ... if you had something to worry about, would it be their fault?
why be nervous? just keep doing a good job and you'll be fine. :wink:

I would think if the spreadsheets are showing the info needed then the recorded calls are a power trip for the owner. Don't expect a person like this to be on your side when you need it. Power trip bosses are sad little people.

I believe it's legal for the company to record you because you are their employee. But they need to be warning the people that are calling that their call is going to be recorded (you know how when you call for customer support to a business, it says at the beginning "This call may be recorded or monitored for blah, blah, blah" -- that's because in most states, you have to inform someone when they are being recorded.

Seems to me that they need to disclose the fact that the calls are recorded to both the reciver and the caller. I hope they are not just listening to these calls for their entertainment. It doesn't make sense if you say you are already tracking the value of the advertising. Good luck; it's a tough decision to make.

I have a similar situation....or phones have caller ID's list the names and the time you were on the call............ I have had my boss call me from her home or desk and ask me who so and so is and why was on the the phone 1-0 minutes with them??? After all, It is company time.....I just have my personal calls come through my cell phone.,...they tell us not to use them, but if you have children in school or business, there are times you will HAVE to have personal calls.
I certainly do not like it, but I take their paycheck each payday!
