I had a little trouble understanding what she wrote.......the scraps in ,Lt, md and dark......plus the colored pieces. I thought I would try as I am just finishing up a quilt :D
Is that right

DonnaRae 03-30-2008 08:37 AM

Yep that is exactly right. But she laid out her choice of colors also to help. The main colors she is useing are blue. I am too sence I have a ton of blue that I have had forever. :D

Denise 03-30-2008 08:42 AM

oh i must take a look at this, i'm definitely interested in a mystery quilt. Thanks for posting. :D

DonnaRae 03-30-2008 10:14 AM

Great Denise, I have another project I must do, so I am in a delima. But I don't know how often the mystery quilt will go on. If for a while then I can have time. I also have to do a baby quilt for my new niece. Oh well I guess I just take on too many things! Hee Hee, that is what makes it fun! :D

oh yes i know what your saying donna, i have a rose quilt, tablerunner, sweet pea wall hanging, and my marjen for error quilt class, plus i went and purchased a new pattern for a quilt called tulip dance. Hopefully by next week i'll be able to get back into finishing some of my ufo's . I posted a pic of the new tulip pattern. I really like this pattern, its a total new way of making tulip blocks. No templates just a matter of figuring out how to fold and sew in place. I read the instructions about 6 times now lol and i think i finally figured out what i'm suppose to do. Now to pick some real nice and bright colors. Thats my husband's job to help me pick colors  He's home from work this week , he doesn't know it yet, but he picking colors today..... Happy sewing :D

this is the tulip pattern, they had a sample made in the store, i just had to have it.

I love that pattern! I just started being a pattern tester for a shop. I can't say much about it because it is not on the market yet and is copywrited. But I will say it has tulips. I am hoping I will learn from this expirence. It does sound like you have a lot on your plate. My DH is also my color picker. He is so much better then me. I especially have problems with purple and blue. It is like the colors run into themselves. And he also is better at putting colors together. Hmm wonder why some men have the eye and we don't? Enough gab. Back to sewing. No house cleaning!

Knot Sew 04-01-2008 03:57 AM

This is great for using up scraps.............I haven't cut or picked my colors,
this looks fun :D you should edit donna.....and mention use up some scraps :D :D :D

PamH 04-01-2008 04:09 AM

Just peeked in at step one---looks like fun but i got to go to work. Can't wait to see the ending product.

Knot Sew 04-01-2008 11:46 AM

I think i have enough mixed strips, I had scraps but not in the right size strips. I picked the pieces of yardage and have to cut those.........how much time do we get? :D

DonnaRae 04-01-2008 12:03 PM

I don't know how much time. She doesn't exactyl say. Don't worry you are way ahead of me. I have lots of strips but the wrong size. Gotta check and see what else I have.

DonnaRae 04-01-2008 12:22 PM

I sent Bonnie the site owner an email asking how much time between steps and about the strip sizes. I also invited her to drop by and even join. Maybe she will. Her site is awesome. If some of you have never checked it out you should even if you are not doing the mystery project. Have Fun! :D

Bonnie replied to the email, and said the steps would be one to two weeks apart, so that is a good amount of time. Also make sure you are using 2 inch strips, if you use another size it will throw everything off. Dang, Now I have to cut strips. Pooey

Quilting Aggi 04-02-2008 03:19 AM

arrrghhh more patterns I MUST TRY!!!

I have been tempted to do a Mystery quilt for a while now. I am evening considering teaching one in the fall to my students as a fun day retreat. I want to do a design in my EQ and make it.

As for the mystery quilt website. .. WOW!! thanks sooo much for sharing!! I was looking through some of her work and I am in awe how she uses scraps!!! Did you see her Cabin Fever quilt?? Over 5000 pieces went into it!! She started the project in 2001 and only completed it recently!!! I thought I WAS NUTS!!! I'm not alone!

Cheers!

DonnaRae 04-02-2008 07:12 AM

Aggi, I know she is truly amazing, and surpasses me by far in the crazy area. She must quilt full time. She puts out a lot and also keeps up a web site. Pretty motivational, I think :!: So are you going to do the mystery too. The more the merrier, we can laugh or cry with each other. I still have to cut strips. Phooey. But today shopping. Fabric shopping that is. I never go shopping now with out at least buying some fabric. Thank goodness for Wally World (aka Walmart). Sure hope they keep their fabric or I will be in a world of trouble. No reasonal priced fabric near by. Enough to make a person need funny pills :!: Well off I am. Every one have a happy Q Day.

live2teach 04-02-2008 08:44 AM

OH wow, I'd like to do this. Thanks for the link.

Quilting Aggi 04-02-2008 09:08 AM

I am seriously considering it DonnaRae. At the moment I am making crumbs, also about to start Trevor's Van Halen Lap quilt, plus a crib quilt and a wedding gift quilt to make.. HA whats one more quilt!! hee hee and then on top of that I have my beach tote bags to put together to get ready to sell!!!! Speaking of having to sew full time!!! LOL

I will take a look at my stash soon I guess.. hmmmm but then I DO have to pass by a quilt shop on my walk home from work.. and I did get paid today... and I do get 3 pay cheques this month.. DOH!!!! looks like I have to do a little bit of fabric shopping along the way home.. I also have to take run to the grocery store as I want to make up a big pot of spaghetti sauce and freeze it for future meals. I love to take a night sometimes and just make up lotsa casseroles, and stuff. Makes a better meal than running to the nearest drive thru!! LOL Okay.. I"ll DO IT!!! I'll take a little run to the quilt shop on the way home.. ooh I hope they got some sales going on!!! I'll take a look at the requirements before leaving the office. I already printed them off on the colour printer.. :)

What colours are you making yours?

PM me if you wish !

Cheers

Quilting Aggi 04-02-2008 09:55 AM

Ok.. so since my last post here (all of 25 minutes LOL) I have decided on my colour scheme.. I am going to make this quilt in shades of yellow, green and blue tone on tones with various white tone on tones.... I will call it "Summer Breeze" The blue for the sky, yellow for the sun, and the green for the beautiful grass. Right now I need to do something to make me feel summer WILL get here.. we are having a freezing rain warning here... I was out over lunch and it was slippery under foot walking. The wind is picking up too... Today looks the furthest thing from summer EVER getting here.. I think using these colours will give me a little perk that I need to get me through the long dragged out horrible winter here :(

DonnaRae 04-02-2008 03:48 PM

Just got home from shopping. I did great. The Berninia store put their wall of sale fabric all 75 percent off. My timing was great. Ohhh I love the fabric I got. Even some batik! My color choices for the mystery is the main blue like hers, and I was thinking tans, muted yellows and such but reading Aggi's colors I think I am going to kind of go in that direction. I know I have to get going and start stripping. I have another project I have to have done by the 10th. So I am pushing it. Oh well I will manage. I emailed and asked Bonnie if I could use 2.5 inch strips (I have a lot of them from I strip swap I was in) and just change all the measurments by .5 inches and she said not a good idea, it would be better for me to make new strips 2 inches. So Aggi let us know how your fabric shopping went. Ah, hopefully it went as good as mine! :D

Chele 04-02-2008 04:46 PM

I'm in DonnaRae. I've loved Bonnie's site forever. Aren't her quilts just spectacular? She must quilt non-stop to get that many scraps! On to my four patches...

2 Doods 04-02-2008 04:51 PM

I'm looking through my fabric now to see if I have anything that will work. Never having done anything like this before I think it will be good for me. I am usually over planning!

Quilting Aggi-I feel the same aboutneeding a reminder that Spring is out there somewhere! Your colors sound great!

DonnaRae 04-02-2008 04:56 PM

Oh goodie goodie goodie, lots of us it seems are going to be doing this mystery. It will be fun to see how each one turns out. So who is ready? Not me. :?

DonnaRae 04-02-2008 04:58 PM

Don't forget everyone, scraps, good way to use them up! :D

Quilting Aggi 04-02-2008 05:44 PM

I picked up some gorgeous shades of yellows, greens and blues. I wont' post my fabrics until I pick out a few more I want to add to it. Bonnie said all those piles of little blue pieces could be switched into one big piece 3/4 yard. so I think I will go that route.

I hope to get a start on it over the weekend. Its should be fun for sure!!!

I have been thinking of making a blue/green/yellow quilt for sometime now... so no excuse to not make one now!!

Its great to see a few others here wanting to make this quilt! I can't wait for all of us to start sharing photos of our progress.

Cheers!

Knot Sew 04-04-2008 03:40 AM

bump Want to keep track of this

Ok I chose my fabrics last night (photos of swatches coming soon), I also started cutting my 2 inch strips.. so far I only have some of the whites done... I was working on another quilt last night. I had to do some prep work for that one. Hopefully over the weekend I"ll start pieces all those 150 4 patches!! fun times ahead!!!

Knot Sew 04-04-2008 10:17 AM

I cut from my scrap bin for the 4 patch......I have about half done

now I have to cut my three colors up .............right? I keep pulling out fabric and changing my mind.

DonnaRae 04-04-2008 10:32 AM

Yes Ruth you are doing good. But hee hee, you are just like me, can't decide on the fabric, don't want to use that, this, maybe that, won't go with this, and on and on. hee hee.

2 Doods 04-04-2008 11:23 AM

I have my 2" light (white/off white) strips cut. Hope to get the 4 patches finished this weekend. I am still debating colors too. :?:

I went to "Henry-JoAnn's" and had a spree like Henry does. Don't tell my DH-I came home with 2 huge bags of fabric. They had flannel on sale and I couln't resist. Looks nice on my shelf-waitng for me

quiltmaker101 04-04-2008 11:27 AM

I'm making this one too. I have half my four patches done. Very diverse colors and prints. I hate not knowing what the finished quilt is supposed to look like, but that is the point of the Mystery Quilt. If it looks dorky, I guess I will donate it. Hopefully it will look nearly as great as Bonnie's scrap quilts look!

DonnaRae 04-04-2008 11:47 AM

Wow everyone is realy going at it. I don't think it will look dorky. At least I hope. I guess it maybe up to us with colores. And maybe I should make a trip to Henry--Hancocks store. No, I am trying to be good. My husband is going to make our back carport into a sewing room for me but we have to buy all the materials. And this morning he mentioned that every time I spend money on fabric that is that much further to it getting done. So the question is fabric or more room. Hard one :!: :D

PamH 04-04-2008 12:22 PM

I'm having the same problem deciding on the colors. But will get started this week-end. I have never done a mystery quilt before, i think it's exciting to find out the steps one at a time.

QuiltingTurtle 04-04-2008 12:41 PM

Thanks for posting about this quilt. I am going to give it a whirl. I have never done a mystery quilt. I am going to start my four patches tonight after my son goes to bed.

Ok... I finally got my four patch fabrics cut into 2" strips. I plan to actually sew them together tomorrow night. My plan was to work on them over the weekend but was hardly home. We had a beeeeeeeaaautiful sunny weekend here and just HAD to get outside and enjoy it. Trevor and I took his 6 year old neice to the butterfly exhibit and to her swimming lesson.. His sister's birthday was Saturday so we had a little party. Yesterday we went out to breakfast, had his other sister and 1 year old nephew over for a visit, then we were off to my Mum's home for supper. whew... no sewing done at all this weekend!!

Anyway, I am attaching a photo of the fabrics I will be using in my 4 patches. I cant' wait to start sewing them up!!!

Cheers

PamH 04-07-2008 07:47 AM

I like your fabric selections Aggi.

I got 70 ( yahoo only 80 more to go  ) of my 4 patch blocks done over the week-end. My blocks are real scrappy looking.

DonnaRae 04-07-2008 11:12 AM

Go going Aggie, I was going to work on mine this weekend but ran in to as snat with the pattern I am checking. Seams to have some errors. Anyway I will get to it! Love your selection. Hmm, I know I am using blue but the rest is a guess. Have to see what I have in scraps.

PamH 04-09-2008 05:36 AM

How is everyone else getting along with the quilts blocks? I've finished all my 4-patch blocks last nite. I'm ready for the next step.

Chele 04-09-2008 09:22 AM

I'm ready too! I thought it would take forever, but I whizzed through them!

Chele, did you go with a color scheme or scrappy?

I just went very scrappy with mine.
