Default Sewing hexies - an alternative to whip stitch

I have long touted the ladder stitch over the whip stitch for doing any kind of EPP. In my experience, whip stitches show on the front of the fabric and ladder stitches don't.

Then I came across this excellent tutorial. Not only does it explain why whip stitches show on the front, it shows a different technique for sewing with a whip stitch that eliminates the visible stitches. Oh happy, happy day!!

Yes! I love thst stitch too. I discovered it about a year ago, didn't know it's name...like the name name she gave it "flat back whip stitch". It is totally invisible from the front and the pieces lay so much flatter, and you really don't have to,worry what color thread you are using...cannot be seen! I make a simple knot about half way up,the side as I'm stitching, just in case......

That’s amazing. It is so similar to the normal whip stitch, but so much less visible.

I've been doing this for years with 1930's reproduction fabric with the Grandmother's flower garden. I highly recommend quiltpatis. Patti Shambaugh has invented them and I bought from her several times and she was helpful with answering any questions.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm just about to seriously embark on EPP and begin work on my always-wanted GFG. My initial experiments have left me a bit frustrated precisely because of the visibility of the stitches despite my best efforts, small, small needle, matching thin thread, etc. I'm on my way now!

That's how I've been sewing my hexies. I don't use tape to keep them together, though. I've been using two of Karen Kay Buckley's thin pins on the right side of the fabric.and sometimes a Clover mini clip. I've found this way better on my hands too. So far, I've only had one Quilt Policewoman remark upon my unconventional way of sewing these but I just smiled and kept on sewing. I like the results.
Thanks for posting this. Now I've got an official name if I need it.

Peckish, thanks so much! I'm working on a hexi at this time. Mine is scrappy so it's not convenient to have to keep changing the thread. Her method is brilliant!
