I saw a video on not wearing a shoe when using a presser foot. The reason being is that it gives you a better feel of the speed that you can control with your foot. Also it was said to place a book (telephone book or some thickness that is comfortable to you) in front of the presser foot so your foot is elevated and you won't get a cramp in your leg as well as have better control.

As far as shoes, I can pretty much sew with or without. But I do spend most of my time at home without.
