If you have a rice bag, try using that on your shoulders every few hours. It'll be soothing but also reminds you to keep your shoulders down in a relaxed position, which puts your elbows down where they belong too. I set the timer to make myself get up and do some stretches, if I'm sitting for any length of time quilting.

You could try rubbing Biofreeze or Aspercreme on your shoulders and arm. Get up and move around a bit.

If it is your needle shoulder that is hurting, you are holding your hoop either too low or too high. Your sholder should be in the comfortable resting position at your side with just your elbow the wrist moving to form a stitch. If you are at a frame, the same thing applies do either put the frame up or down until your shoulder is relaxed.

I just can't bring myself to spend the money for one of the Thimblelady thimbles. Not yet.

The plastic one was only $15 three years ago. It works great!

I, too, started out with the $15 plastic version - which is still sized to your specifications. After wearing that one out, I kicked for the stainless steel version at I think $25. I'm on my second one of those due to wearing out the first one. And stainless is far more durable the sterling! When I think of the $$ I've spent over the decades on thimbles that didn't fit; didn't work; not comfortable; etc., they've been cheap by comparison.
