The quilt is nearly twin size, so I pinned the backing to the carpet, then continued to make the sandwich. I pinned from the center, smoothing as I went along. Pinned, pinned, pinned, listened to election results, pinned, pinned.
When I took up the quilt it was bunched up on the back! All those pins have to come out, but at least my vote counted!
My next idea is to tape the backing on a tile floor and start the whole thing over. I had thoughts of hand quilting this baby, but it's soooo big a project. Stitching in the ditch will be hard to do only because of the size of the piece. I've bitten off more than I can chew. I won't take it to someone to finish. Not an option.
Any other suggestions?

I always do my pinning on the kitchen floor. Thank goodness it is big enough. Tape back taught (but not stretched).

Sorry you have to do it ALL over.

If you heavily starch the backing, that should help keep it unbunched while you pin. I use a 1:1 solution of Sta Flo liquid laundry starch and water.

Have you considered spray basting? With that method you can put the batting down first, then smooth the backing over until you are satisfied. Flip so other side of batting is up and do the same with the top. This makes it easier to get both sides the way you want them.

Thanks for commiserating with me. I'm going to remember this and try it as soon as I get the heating pad off my back!
Blessings,
A.

Tape to your tile floor. It works better than carpet. Buy a cheap pair of knee pads so you don't kill your knees. Believe me, they are worth it.

Starch, starch, starch the back. Get it as stiff as you can. It really helps.

Spray basting seems to work really well, but it is pricey and I'm cheap so I end up pinning most of the time. Pin it like crazy -- and then pin it some more. That seems to help me.

I use the carpet, easier on my knees  I place one of those flat glass marbles (used in vases for floral arrangements) underneath the backing. It slightly raises the area so I can pin it easily. I just gently slide it around where it is needed :D:D:D

Starching the backing first really makes a big difference, and also slightly stretch out the backing when you pin it to the carpet or tape it to the floor :D:D:D
