I use high loft polyester batting on all my quilts, warm without the weight.

I believe in layering, I use a quilt with wool in it on my bed plus a fleece blanket the same size in our cold Wisconsin winters. Flannel bed sheets help too.
If you get a quilt that is very heavy, you will have a hard time turning over in bed.
