I did one today on purpose so I could use a serpentine stitch to tack the front down. So much arthritis in my hands I only hand sew the binding if it's for a show

I would just finish it that way unless it's a show quilt. It's not going to matter to anybody else. Plus, some people do it that way on purpose!

I usually sew my binding on the front of the quilt and turn to back. I machine stitch the binding down from the front. It is hard to always catch the underneath edge when stitching on the front.....the last couple finding I did, I sewed the binding on the back of the quilt, turned to the front and used a very narrow zig zag stitch to sew it down. Never ran off the edge one time. I used the same thread as I used for the quilting, and I think it is the best looking binding I've sewn on. Now, if I can remember to do that next time.

Actually, I do this all the time! I don't do any handwork because of a pinched nerve in my neck, so I machine sew my bindings. If you sew it to the wrong side and fold over to the front side it is very easy to see where you are sewing and can get a very neat seam. Also, sometimes I use the buttonhole or applique stitch to finished the binding on the right side. Especially if I have used the buttonhole stitch in the blocks. Fast, fun and easy!

can any of you gals post pics of your bindings that you sew on the back and then decorative stitch to the front?

It totally sounds like my idea of a good time (lol) but I can't visualize it...

Working on one right now. I don't think anyone will have a problem with it and hand stitching is a nice touch.

I can post a picture of my last one in a day or so. I have run out of space on my memory card in the camera, so have to download and save all the photos so I can delete them from the camera....that is scary!

I just did a quilt stitching the binding to the back first and it is a good way to do it.
I need fewer pins and it is easy to see the stitchs you want to follow so you stay close to the ditch on the back.
The difference is you have stitchs on the edge of the binding on the front. I like it and no hand sewing.

Here are a few pictures. You can't really tell the difference. I didn't get any good close ups.
