How old is your son? What about madras plaid? Plaids can be pretty 60's & 70's. Applique or fuse your peace symbols or peace signs on top in wild colors or tie dye batiks. You can also add patches --look at Joanne's or Hancock Fabrics for them.

I love mushrooms, too. Especially the ugly ones from the 70's, lol. My mom hates them, but I think they are just soooo retro.
I found some really cute 70's material at Walmart. It's got disco balls, people with bellbottoms,etc. Thats going to be my border.
I also have some cute Beatles material, with "All you need is love" written over and over in different colors.
