Yep. Every time someone mentions the hippies in the 70's I get uptight. The true hippies were in the mid to late sixties. I know...I was there. But I gave up trying to educate people a long time ago.

Hello sister! And 'hippies' never called themselves 'hippies'. No one gets that either. That's okay. It was the best of times and I wouldn't change a single thing about those years.

Don't forget the Lava Lamps. There is a new fabric out that glows in the dark. I don't know the name of it but they have it at Threads of Time in Danville Il.
http://www.threadsoftimefab.com I don't know if they ship but if not they'll tell you the name of it so that your LQS can get it for you. Tell them Alfreda sent you.
Anyway, that Glow in the Dark fabric would be great to make some applique piece symbols, or "beads" out of for the border. Personally I'd make a huge beaded necklace around the border.
Guitars would be good, some fringed vests, or you could even make 45 record appliques with songs like "Aquarius" "Give Peace a Chance" "War" "Purple Haze" (okay, you might not want that one) "Imagine" "Bobbie McGee" "I Got You Babe", etc.

You can use a really dark (masculine) color on the flower and the background. I think as a symbol, the flower power needs to be included. Have him watch "Hair" - he'll get it.

How about concentric circles in wild colors.

    OMG - having flashbacks. lol

LOL...well I was in High School and college in the 70's... and really by '75 it was all over, and we were starting to get into "pre-disco funk" - but those gigantic flowers in one of the earlier posts nailed the look - go find some "Laugh-In" stills or youtube videos.

I thought the whole VW bus thing was 60's - the 70's were about the Mustang and the Dodge Challenger and muscle cars.

Why not google images for the musical 'Hair'? They have a lot of hippie stuff out there for the Broadway revival that just closed.

70's too, I graduated in '75. I had the micro minis w/the boots, sizzler dresses (the ones with the matching panties), maxi dresses, hot pants, low hiphuggers, blue eye shadow w/blue mascara hair down to my bottom end. Remember the fishnet stockings & garter belts and when pantyhose came about?

Some of the best muscle cars came out of the 60's.

There are lots of fabric out now that depicts the 60's. All the bright colors, flowers, etc. very easy to find. Don't know how manly though.
