What fun! Nice newly painted room and nice new (to you at least) machine, what's not to love! Your entire plan is just right.

Did you say 12% tax????? I thought I heard you right. I knew sales tax was higher in Canada than the U.S. but 12%? Gosh, how do you guys survive up there? Anyway, I'm happy for you. It sounds like you did everything right. Please do let us see an example of your finished quilting on your new machine. Congratulations.

Hi llong0233,

In Canada we have both Provincial and Federal Sales tax. Because of this sales tax varies by province.

The federal tax GST is 5% and my BC Provincial tax is 7%.

Alberta, the province next to BC, does not have a Provincial Sales tax, so their residents only pay the 7% GST. People in BC who live closer to AB will shop in AB to avoid the tax, although technically they are supposed to voluntarily submit it. The BC Gov't tried to get Costco to give up information about BC shoppers in AB, but they were not allowed by the courts to get the information.

I live a long days drive from the BC/AB border, so no interprovincial shopping for me. It is easier to shop locally or online.

I do travel to AB to visit family every other year.
