Here's a link to a heart-shaped yo-yo tutorial: http://gonetoearth.typepad.com/gonet...d-yo-yo-s.html The shapes in your plastic bag don't look the same as those used here, tho. But I encourage you to google heart yo-yos, as there are a number of sites I didn't look through. Good luck!

This was my thought also, especially since she was so meticulous.

your 'Mystery box' could very well be her (scrap) project- working on many other projects it could be this is what she does (did) with her scraps-- made flowers, yo-yo's, small blocks {rail fence, 9-patch) with the intension of just 'playing' with a lay out when she is tired of making components...just play around with them & see what you come up with.

Looks like she found a great pattern and made her own kits.

Great find and I am sure she would be so pleased to know another quilter got them. I believe what you have might be her scrap saving system. I cut down leftovers into usable sized pieces. I have 2" and 3" strips and squares and tons of HST in two different sizes made for my someday scrap quilt all stored in plastic bags like that. I have a scrappy LC that has been a work in process almost since I first started quilting. I have the logs all cut and seperated into light medium and dark bags and a few blocks already sewn together. I have scraps of batiks I use for applique. I suspect she had several different scrap quilts she planned on making. A GFG looks to be one and maybe a scrappy RF and 9P. The flower petals could have been for an applique project or maybe she planned on bordering her completed srap quilt with lovely applique flowers. Have fun with the find and make it your own. There is a lot that could be done with those fabulous bags.

Clover make a "heart yo-yo" maker. But I can see making a heart out of those pieces as well.
