I am about to make a puff quilt for my nephew's graduation gift. However, he is colorblind. Does anyone out there know what colors are typically seen as contrasting to people that are colorblind? It would be nice if he could at least see the pattern in the squares because of the contrast. Thanks for any advice on this topic!

If you have enough variance in the value of your colors, he will see them. If in doubt, take a photo and look at it in black and white. You'll know quick enough if there is enough contrast.

My son is colorblind, and can see good contrasts. If you choose colors that show distinctly when photographed in black and white, he will be able to see them as well.

Edit-good minds think alike!!

Is he colorblind in all colors or just in some colors?

Some folks are red/green or yellow/blue colorblind yet they can see other colors just fine.

I would think you could take a picture of any colors you want to use and when you go to print the picture on your computer, use greyscale or black & white to see what the colors would do in a non-color setting. This is one of the tricks someone on this site uses for bargello quilts.

http://colorvisiontesting.com/color2.htm explains that green and red are the most common colors that can't be distinguished. The article is interesting.

If you don't have a digital camera, you can also put fabrics on a photocopier and make a b/w copy to see if you can distinguish between colors

There are several different kinds of color blindness. Most men can't see green and sometimes red. If you look up color blindness in Wikipedia it shows what colorblindness looks like. Guess you need to find out from his parents what kind of colorblindness he has. Here is the link to the info.

There are different degrees of colour blindness...
My husband is colour blind but thankfully my 2 sons are not...he has trouble with shades of browns, tans, greens, beiges, greys,...more so if it is the same value colours...if we are looking for a grey coloured rug, he might point to a light sage..that kind of thing..but he can see reds, greens, blues, etc...I would say maybe use brighter colours...

I discovered my oldest son was colorblind when he was quite small, and I was tossing medium colored wash cloths on a medium blue bedspread, and suddenly he couldn't find them. They had to be sharply contrasting colors. Even the Army used him to spot camouflaged guns in a lot of trees.

I think if you make the quilt in sharply contrasting colors it will make him proud to have one of his own. Black and white are always in style, and you can add any color you want for accent.

It is very individual. My late husband loved purple, but he didn't call it purple. I never did understand that.
