I love those colors! I'm planning to make a bed runner for my daughter in those colors but feel like I should use some contrast with at least one of each color in darker shade. Or maybe black or gray sashing? I don't have a pattern yet so I need to do that first, then choose colors. Your quilt will be beautiful!

I don't like to do this, I should take my own advice, make a sample block. You may not like the way the green and white plaid/check plays with the pattern. I've been reading a lot about tone and value, making a quilt sing. A bit more contrast, even in just one of the colorways, scattered randomly should do the trick. I'd keep it the two color quilt. That must have been your initial gut reaction!

I agree. You need a few darker purples and a few darker greens to go go with the fabric you have. I have a whole room in purple and green. I love it.

I agree with the "matchy matchy" info. It can be too predictable. A variety in value and hue jazzes up a color palet. Such as slightly yellow-green to slightly blue-green and slightly red-violet to slightly blue-violet.

Another comment was the choices need to convey the "mood" you want. Quiet, serene, calm, soft, spring. Adding white will be a cleaner look, more like spring. Sand/cream will give a beach/ocean feel. Darker values will add strength and less sweet. A triad will have more energy, hinse, add salmon.

Another good comment is the size of the pieces will make a difference in the size motif that will be affective. I'd choose very small print or solid. Don't like any of the polka dots for small pieces.

I did the Bonnie Hunter Easy Street quilt and she suggested apple greens, shades of teal and purple. Teal works nicely with greens and purples if you care for a third color. Otherwise, I agree that more dark values would be nice. I learned from a LQS that if I take samples of my fabric and copy them in black and white on my printer, I can get a pretty accurate picture of how the values all work together. That might help you decide if you really need more than what you have selected. I love the greens and purples too!

I think your two colors are fine but in this case, to avoid the boring factor, you'll need to find better contrast within the colors. Looks like you've got a lot of mid-range. If you want to see how the fabrics compare, take a black and white digital photo and you'll see which are light, dark and in the middle.

Also googled the pattern. It's lovely and reading about Lucy Boston was interesting. I enjoy English paper piecing and hope you will too. I'd stick to these two color families using the fabrics you showed us but I'd add white as the outer border of each block. Look forward to seeing it finished!
