I have ripped, and it works well with some fabrics, but the treads pull too hard and mess up the edges too bad on others. (I do generally tear if I need to get the grain perfect.
I've also used the walking method. Another way to think about it is with division. ie. 104" divided by 8 (layers) = 13". divided by 4 (layers) = 26". Having to cut 8 layers for an OBW I learned to use a brand new blade and my rotary cutter set to *heavy duty*(thick fabric). It went like a breeze. My rotary cutter is blue and has 2 settings: light & heavy duty. It doesn't have its brand name on it so I can't tell you what that is. Good luck. You can also use the flat flower-headed pins to hold your fabrics together. You want to pin it so there is no bump in your fabric. If this is confusing, you can PM me for more info. I usually come onto the Quilting Board once a week.

i nead to cut strips 5 1/2 x 123 lenghtwise cuts. How do I cut these as I only have a 24 inch ruler and to fold it makes too many layers to rotary cut. Any help is appreciated.

My suggestion would be to fold your fabric into however many thicknesses you can cut. After you make your first 24" cut you would then move your ruler up to make the next cut.

I'm with you! I've never been able to cut a strip that long accurately!
