This is the best idea. You are going to have a lot of trouble getting the bordered edges to go where you want them to and keep them straight and have them show on the edges of the back. Much better to put those borders in the center; anywhere in the center. 10" or even more would put the borders into the back enough so that you wouldn't have to worry about them getting cut off at the edges.

Yes, that is exactly what I was thinking, if you can re-sew the borders together so they would be down the middle without losing some of the pattern of the border itself.

I would cut a 6"(or any width you like) strip from the middle of the fabric, then flip the remainder and sew each border to that strip. So you will have two cherry stripes down the back with 6" between them.
