I learned to sew at age 6-8 years by pedaling the machine my Mom had. From there, I put sleeves in dresses she was making, took 4-h before you could officially join 4-H (9) and took items to state fair for competition. Also took Home Ec. in high school and have sewed swim suits, bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, and curtains, you name it cheer leader and band uniforms for schools besides alterations. Still sew and in more quilting as it was my want to do "some day". Retired but not tired. Having a ball!

I wish I had learned then. I didn't develop any interest in anything domestic until I was married at 19. I was shocked to find my interests skyrocket in cooking, canning, sewing, quilting, etc. We didn't have home ec classes offered in Jr. High, but did in high school. I was too foolish then to think I'd ever use that information! Fortunately, it's never too late to learn.

Yep - Jr. High - Hated every minute of of. We had to learn how to knit (I am left handed) and nobody knew how to do it left handed. Machine would sew funny, needle breaks, and I with no patience. Guess it took 55 years to grow patience and for someone to perfect a sewing machine. Been quilting for 10 years and love it. Still don't do any other sewing, just make quilts.

When I was in hs (and dirt was new), for some reason, kids who were in college prep (no one ever asked ME if that was my plan), were not allowed to take "frivolous" classes like home ec, typing or shorthand - what could a college student POSSIBLY need with those skills???? I taught myself to sew (still a WIP). I still mess up lots of things, but when I'm done, I know how to do it! BTW, I finally made it to college at 45.

I learned after I became disabled, I read everything I could, asked a lot of questions at my LQS and did a lot of trial and error. I love quilting.

Sure did, Home Ec was required for the girls and shop was required for the boys. They would never get away with that nowdays. :D

I learned to sew by hand from my grandmother, and she made quilts as well. (Old school, with the cardboard templates and scissors) I didn't learn to use a machine until JR High, when they threw me into Home Ec 2. I was lost for a long time since I never took Home Ec 1. LOL Eventually I got comfortable sewing by machine recently with my 1966 White, it's like a tank.
