If you don't like the loft of Warm & Natural (I do and use it all the time), you might use cotton flannel instead. Wash first to pre-shrink.

I use flannel when I want a thinner feeling. Just be sure to wash using warm water and dry in the drier. Flannel can really shrink.

I use warm and natural for mine, but a layer of flannel works too. You can also use that potholder batting with the foil in it. I did that for one for my daughter and she loves it. She uses it in the middle of her table to put hot dishes on.

I did the same thing..I made a table runner for a gift, with poly, and then one with warm and natural...I chose to use none...I like them better without..

The 15 Minute Tablerunner uses no batting inside, it is made up of two pieces of cloth. I made tablerunners years ago with the thinnest batting I could find, nice, but the ones I made without are better. If you set something on the thinner ones, you won't have to worry about it falling over. And the table don't need the warmth.

I just saw some Thermore on sale and I think that is what I will use. That way I won't need to worry about hot dishes!!

Sometimes a pattern has lots of pieces (means lots of seams) so I have used a good quality flannel. Don't use the cheappie kind, it has to have a good feel to it and the runners will be great. Not too thick, but with some heft to them. Try one and see what you think. It is also great to use for coasters. :-D
