By the mere definition - "an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation and not as a main occupation", I guess it is..:) My love for quilting is a hobby I am very passionate about....along with my dancing and my horseback riding....All three make me very very happy....Now with that in mind, I do understand your annoyance with the word hobby being applied to quilting....I'm the same way when someone refers to my quilting as "Oh, you do crafts"....HUH??? Guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder....:)

It is a hobby with a lot of addiction thrown in.

Love it! I get asked to alter this, patch that, etc. all the time, and I finally learned to say "No, I only quilt."

I usually refer to it as therapy, because that is how it often functions for me. Obsession would be a close second, but I wouldn't describe it as a hobby.

It is not for profit so has to be a very expensive hobby that is also an addiction and obsession.
It has to be cause I hate to sew and gave it up years ago.
Yet here I am at the sewing machine enjoying sewing but only because it is quilting.

I'm somewhere in between hobby and passion. I love what I do but I have many other interests. There are times I quilt every day and times when I go 2-3 months without any sewing at all. (Summers on the road being one example: but even than my GFG goes with me as well as some needlepoint and my NOOK.)

It is a hobby. I don't get paid.

Quilting is a hobby for me, like sewing clothing, knitting, and crocheting. I make things for my pleasure and for family and friends, not to sell.

Perhaps my perception of the word "hobby" is distorted. I should adjust my definition to the more officially Webster variety. Thanks for all your replies. :)

It does not bother me. A hobby, in my humble opinion, is anything you do that is not your job rather it be painting, sewing, scrapbooking, crocheting, etc.

If someone quilts for a living, then no, it's their profession.

I do not, so it's my hobby.
