Like anything else, it's a pastime for some, total obsession for others. I enjoy quilting and it is a moderate part of my total life. Used to belong to a local quilt guild. There were a couple of people who would turn out at least one king quilt a month and this was before long arm quilting. On one such occasion, the lady next to me made the snarky comment "I can only imagine what lousy housekeepers they must be". Thought that was rather mean spirited of her. Live and let live and if it brings you joy, then go for it.

I dont mind hearing it referred to as a hobby, I hate it when someone tells me ...you are so crafty..or you are good at crafts. I dont consider sewing/quilting as a craft. I guess it is all semantics lol.

I agree, quilting is a passion and a sanity safety net. I sell real estate for a living so I don't see much instant gratification in my workplace, everything takes so long these days. But I can piece a block in minutes, or quilt a whole quilt in a couple of days and see first hand the fruits of my labors.

I do what I do because I want to. The only time my handiwork is called a hobby is when there's a blank to fill asking abut hobbies.

I am in total agreement with you on this! But it has also become an obsession as well as mental health necessity!

I would like to think of myself as an artist, timid as I am about it. As a hobby, I make charity quilts, but as an artist I'm thinking about selling my art quilts and want to be thought of as a professional. So, when someone calls what I do a hobby, it irritates me. And, like most of us, quilting is a lifetime passion and great therapy for me, too.
