So sorry about your mom. Did she hand embroidery or machine. I have a few my mother made when I was a kid. She had company tea towels and everyday tea towels and always made from flour sacks, like 36" square. You would not believe the quality of these beautiful flour sacks. Nothing like WM's.

I tried the Walmart dishtowels...they are ok...but with having to iron them before I could embroider on them, it was less costly to buy 100% cotton bleached muslin and cut my own. I bought the 90" wide and get 3 per width of fabric...I cut them 30" square.
I will say the walmart towels...very absorbent once washed. So are the ones made from the 100% muslin. The muslin wash and dry beautifully.
I tried embroidering before washing and after, using the same stabilizer, thread & design...made little difference in using redwork type designs.

bless 'em, our local "fleet farm" carries the plain muslin tea towels for embroidering. i use them plain, too--hubby has parkinson's, and loves them for a "bib" or large napkin across chest and lap. he's not fussy about "pretty"--just practical!
