A couple of years ago I lived in the Southern California Desert area. I used to shop at Discount Fabrics in Lancaster and buy quilting fabrics (45" wide) for $2 to $2.50/yard. No, they didn't have as great of a selection as you find at most LQS.

I don't get to buy fabric, I only get to quilt because the wonderful people on this board give me fabric so I can quilt. God bless.

Well at the moment the currency exchange is good for us. For example $7.99 US = $8.73Au so only a little difference, most of our fabric though in LQS are $22Au to $28Au (well over here on the West coast anyway). We can buy it from other stores for an average price of $19.95Au/metre and on sale for anywhere from $2 to$8/metre but one has to be careful of what type of fabric it is as not all of it is good quality and it shows. Quite often the fabric in those particular stores that are put out for this price are also types that aren't selling for what ever reason.

I recently bought a roll of fabric from one of these stores which was on sale for $6. It look and felt fine but when I washed it, the fabric frayed badly, wrinkled worse and also lost a lot of colour. The fabric was from India and I was dubious intially but thought, why not give it a try as it isn't dear etc. Lesson learnt

I tend to by local, and keep the small business' open. We have 2 small stores in the community in which I live, if one store has a sale, then that is where I shop! If they both have a sale then I frequent both! I tend to purchase things on sale, and my mother in law is a great source! I will take old shirts, jeans and what not apart. However if I NEED a certain colour then I go get that one colour!

I make the 1 1/2 hour trip to Marshall's in Batesville, AR for special projects. However, I always end up with plenty for my stash while I'm there. I can't justify sewing for charities and paying $9/yd for the fabric.

 Oh my gosh! This sure makes me feel better about paying $9 or $10 a yard, when I do. Which isn't often.

It is so beautiful I just can't stop looking at it. If I ever get over that, someday I will use it to make something for myself for a change of pace. How about patterns? Do you all spend the $9 at QS's or do you use free patterns, or buy a book and use it over and over if you find a favorite?
