I'm from Greenville, SC, but I will definitely vouch for the fact that Mary Jo's is worth at least an hours' drive, if not more. The selection is incredible, and the prices considerably below that of LQS.

Dutchman's Store, Cantrill, IA - Mennonite - quite a selection, good prices

Fabric Fairie, Auburn, NE - specializes in batiks
Needles I, Auburn, NE

Sewing Basket, Nebraska City, NE - always has something 40-50% off
Pendleton outlet, Nebraska City, NE, if you work with wool for your quilts. You have to go downstairs - all the yardage is in the basement. The wool is very reasonably priced, and wonderful!

Heavenly Treasures, Pawnee City, NE - out of the way, but so worth the trip. The backings available here are fantastic, and very reasonable.

Material Girl, Grand Island, NE - a great store for a lot of different styles of quilting fabric.

If you are looking for BRIGHTS! - the Cosmic Cow, Lincoln, NE (they do have other styles, too.)

And in Kearney, NE, there is a shop down on 'the bricks' (downtown area) called Quilter's Cottage. I have found a lot of bargains there - also a wide selection of backings.

These are some of my favorites. Some have a skinny bolt area where you can buy fabric for a greatly reduced price. Sorry to be so long-winded. If someone is visiting in NE, I can give them info in a PM. (There are quite a few more LQS, and then there are the chain stores...)

Your list just has to have.... drum roll...

Even if I don't have anything to buy I might just drop in at least once a week ... the staff is so wonderful and genuinely heplful. I've been told I should have a name tag... (meaning I should consider working there since I'm there so often! They are like family to their customers.)

Mary Jo's in Gaston in Gaston, N.C. It is in a building that used to be a super market. BIG They have their fabics seprated by color and by theme. Their prices are below quilt shop prices and it is good quality. It is right off exit 21 on Route 85. I stop all the time on my way to my son's house in Georgia.

if you are ever in Hong Kong, let me know. There are several streets with fabric in the sewing district of Sham Shui Po. I purchase most of my stuff there, along with trims, blades, batting, for a really good price. We don't get the designer fabrics like in the states, but some of the stuff is great.

In Alden, Ks. a little farm town between Lyons & Sterling, they have a unique quilt store on main street. We have so many here, but this one is just so friendly and they do have mail orders. Its called Prairie Quilts or something like that. Have to stop in to appreciate it. I've been there but the name escapes me now.
