I found that everything in Europe was more expensive than here in the states. They don't understand free enterprise like we do and don't have the competition that we have. Our friends in Europe like our prices here but then turn around and tell us how we do everything wrong. Bleh! We here in the US are truly unique and we should be proud of our society! (Maybe they import from the US and have surcharges added to everything!)

I was in Amsterdam 2 years ago visiting relatives and bought, yes bought, some of their fabrics. I think I got several yards which translated into over $100 Canadian. However, in Canada the very nice fabrics are close to $20 a meter (just a bit over a yard). Love online shopping and am amazed that I can order fabric for a queen size quilt for about $70.00.

I live in the UK and get 99.9% of my fabrics from the US because I couldn't afford to quilt if I bought my fabric here. The prices range from £8/$13 upwards :shock:

I can get a wonderful range of fabrics from the US, 6 yards cost me $28/£17 including postage = $4.65/£2.85 per yard. Even my threads are heaps cheaper, even with the postage from the US.

There is a lady in my area who was downsizing her fabric stash and put out the word to all the local quilters she was selling for $3/yd. She had several large storage units.

When I went to stock up, there was a lady from Australia who was just in hog heaven. She borrowed a large empty suitcase from her friend she was visiting and proceeded to buy over 100 yards of fabric. And was trying to figure out how to buy more and ship it to herself.

She said fabric is over $20/m. She was one happy person.

Not just fabric, but batting, too. I had a thread a week or two about a flyer from our eqivalent of Joann's. A queen batt was on sale for about $30?, regular price was $70, IIRC, per the flyer. I buy it by the case From the US at $13-14 each, including shipping.

When we used to go to Bermuda every year I always took cheese, big blocks of it to our friends, as it was so expensive there. Now, I guess if I go to other countries I should take a suitcase full of fabric for quilters there, even Canada. Unfortunately I do not travel to other countries, since I am still trying to see all of the U S. I also have not applied for a passport. Last time I left the U S all you needed was a drivers license and a birth certificate.

Our fabrics cost much less but I really don't consider $10 or more a yard "cheap". Plus, if we send fabrics to friends they have to pay very high postal duty on them. Not fair, right???

What is sad is that even the employers are not giving raises... I guess they agree with the govt. - no raise in cost of living.....

My sympathies to those paying more for fabrics.
