For years I have been collecting fabric with gold thread. Some are asian with gold thread and some are blenders with gold thread. I too am making an i-spy quilt using hexagons. The setting triangles are black and it's really looking good. I do think tho that it needs some kind of border but I'm not sure. Suggestions are welcomed.!

I order I spy squares from Ebay--a couple of packs at a time--saves me lotsa time buying and cutting. Very reasonable.

I make them for children -- 2 - 7 ish. That way they can learn to identify specific items - colors - numbers etc.

I take 4 - 5 inch squares, sew them together put a many colored kid fabric on the border and put it all together.

sometimes you can specify whether you want girl squares or boy squares.

I think that's a great idea. It would work for jar quilts too. I guess you could do different flowers too for a garden quilt.

I have made two. I use a template I bought years ago that is a hexagon with tiny triangles into the hexagons. Just found it. Dated 2002 and marketed by Come Quilt With Me, 3903 Avenue I, Brooklyn, N.Y.,11210, 718-377-3652. Don't know if any of the info is current. Makes a cute quilt.

I like to fussy cut my squares - even "all-overs" have areas that look better "in the frame" than other areas.

I bought yardage over the years - and now I'm into swapping.

I have some prints that I thought would be adorable as I Spy prints, but no matter where I put the template, it just didn't look "right."

Fat 1/8ths are a GREAT way to get plenty of different fabrics for eye spy quilts!!! Small bundles or even selling them individually works for a shop here in town. Within the past few months I've quilted 5 of them for 1 lady, someone else will see it and then they end up making one and it just takes off from there.

Swaps and Stash.
Occasionally i see a unique fabric i don't have, and buy a FQ or a small amount off the bolt. ( i just bought one with race cars at the LQS)
my first I-Spy, i did piping on it, which was also a "first" time working with piping..

i would rather make these for baby showers than the typical quilt.

I'm trying to figure out whether there would be a market for, say, fat 1/8's assortments of, say, animals, or junk food, or vehicles, or... you name it. (And please *do* name it, if you have a suggestion!)

If you've ever been to my site you already know we're heavily into novelty fabrics, so we have the fabrics to draw from.

Could someone describe an I Spy quilt for me? I just see simple large blocks with some major "cutesie" fabric here and there. Is there a system to making one or a plan?

My I-spy's ,so far ,have had just one of everything. some use two of each pattern,and mix them up, to make a "match game" out of it.
I prefer to have my squares as big as 7" finished . I like them big and try to use bright colors in the sashing or border..

You might also consider doing farm animals, cats and dogs as three separate groups and possibly butterflies as a group separate from bugs. Just thinking along the categories that would appeal to me...
