If the thread is fine enough, just treat them as one thread. I have done this to get a different effect. You do have to use a needle with a bigger eye. More like a Top Stitch needle.

Just tried this last night doing FMQ. Worked fabulously. I had been trying to get a thicker look with my stitching and have been using Isocord at 40 wt. but still wasn't think enoough but this worked great! Am happy now.
