How do you choose the backing for your quilts?

I've just started adding a pieced row down the center to cover the fact that there has to be a seam (using 44 inch wide material to cover 65x75 or so size) and to give the back a bit more interest!

I've started piecing the backs with leftover fabric from the project. In fact, I buy more of the fabric specifically to do it this way. Lots of people will say they buy cheaper or plain fabric for the back, but when you think about it, what gets more surface wear? The back! and what do you see when you pull it up over yourself? The back! So make it fun to see. I only use plain when I'm doing a wall hanging!

Guess I am in the minority on this one. I always use a wide backing fabric. I don't like to piece the backs, and with so many choices in wide backing fabrics there is usually one out there to go with the front. Recently though I have purchase two different wide backing fabrics from Fabric.com @ $6.98 a yard. A neutral and a gold. So far they look great on all quilts I have finished. I like to save my left over pieces from all my quilts to make scrappy quilts such as log cabins, courthouse steps and the like. That is just my preference.
